Health classes explained

Health classes (Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard): what they mean and how you move between them.

Life insurance rates depend on rate class. Names differ between providers, yet the ranking aligns: Preferred Plus (also Preferred Elite or Super Preferred), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, then extra tiers for above-standard risks. Tobacco use means a different, higher-cost tier system.

What underwriters look at

Body composition, blood pressure and cholesterol, cardiac or cancer family history before age 60, driving history, medical claim history, current diagnoses and medications, and any gaps in healthcare coverage.
